There are many ways to keep in shape at the Michael J Gould Kirkwood Recreation Center. With three athletic courts, a weight room, fitness area and an aerobics/multi-purpose room there are enough resources to keep any person, who desires, fit and healthy.

One way Rec Center users keep their body in shape is the fitness and wellness classes held in the aerobics/multi-purpose room. Monday through Friday there are different classes offered for any student, faculty or Rec Center member to take. Classes offer users a variety of activities that work many different muscles in the body.

Rec Center users can decide for themselves what days and times they want to take a fitness class. Mondays start off with a body fit class in the morning, followed by Yoga later in the afternoon.

On Tuesdays, Sunrise Surprise starts the day off at 6:15 a.m. Tuesdays conclude with a step/sculpt aerobics class. Wednesdays are full of classes, featuring Butz & Gutz in the morning, body fit class, abs class and cardio blast into the evening. Thursdays offer a firm and tone class in the morning and cardio combo fitness at night. Fridays conclude the week with the third body fit class that is offered.
There are unique features offered in every class that separate them from the others offered. While the body fit class is designed to boost metabolism, tone muscles and burn fat, Yoga class offers a way to simply improve overall health and reduce stress, according to the Rec Center fitness and wellness class Web site.

Kirkwood’s volleyball coach Jill Williams requires the team to take classes on Wednesdays. Williams is also the Fitness/Wellness Coordinator at the Rec Center.

“I think the biggest benefit gained from attending the classes is the fact that it adds diversity and variety to their workout schedule. It allows them to try different things; yoga, aerobics, abs class and be more involved on campus all the while continually working on their fitness level,” said Williams.

“I like them, they are nice because they are something different,” said Liberal Arts major and volleyball player Janae Rosien about the fitness wellness classes.
The objective in every class is to better the overall well being of those who attend them.
