Program aim to address driver shortage

Cedar Rapids, Iowa (August 31, 2015)-Kirkwood’s Hummer partnership will be enhanced by the company’s designation by the Department of Veteran Affairs (VA) as a registered apprentice program. Veterans with GI Bill or post 9/11 benefits can transition from the military into a truck driving career with Kirkwood training and on-the-job experience at Hummer.

Hummer’s partnership with the VA qualifies eligible veterans and active reservists to receive financial assistance using GI Bill benefits. During the apprenticeship program, workers are eligible to earn a tax free, monthly stipend to supplement compensation from Don Hummer Trucking.

“Working with the VA and Kirkwood expands the resources we can offer to an important segment of our workforce, “ said Hummer President Chris Hummer. “ We want to help veterans transition into a career they can be proud of after serving our country. This apprenticeship program makes it possible for someone to earn a living as they train for a new position.”

Kirkwood has partnered with Hummer since 2013. The partnership with this local carrier stemmed as an effort to increase the hiring of student drivers. Students must pass a four week Class A, CDL (commercial truck driving) training course through Kirkwood to be eligible for Hummer’s apprentice program.

The Hummer partnership is just one example of how Kirkwood provides support for one of the biggest challenges facing the American transportation industry.

According to Director of Transportation Greg Stewart, “The American Trucking Association indicates there is a 35,000 driver shortage right now. It is expected to grow to 200,000 by 2020.”

Kirkwood works with a transportation sector board to understand the needs of the local industry. The certificate and pathway programs currently offered through Kirkwood are designed to produce more Class B (straight truck) drivers, trailer, diesel and logistic technicians.
