Manufacturers opening their doors to the public

Cedar Rapids, Iowa (October 13, 2015)—Kirkwood Community College is working with local manufacturers to educate area high school students about manufacturing careers and the required skill sets. Companies in Benton, Johnson, Linn and Washington counties are opening their doors to the public, October 19 – 22.

The Advancing the Future tour of manufacturers in Iowa’s Creative Corridor is happening for the third year. This year the college will host an information session on Thursday, October 22, from 4 – 6 p.m. at Jones Hall on main campus. Two panel discussions that are open to the public will be held about manufacturing jobs and how to build skills in the industry.

More than 350 students from Cedar Rapids high schools, including Kennedy, Metro and Washington, as well as Benton, Midland, North Cedar and Washington high schools will be touring companies of their choice and participating in the information session.

The two-day tour begins as early as 8:30 a.m. and ends as late as 7:30, with tours every 30 minutes. For a complete list of touring facilities, their location and hours, please visit www.kirkwood.edu/advancingfuture. Participants are required to wear long pants and closed-toe shoes. Safety glasses will be provided.

Advancing the Future is sponsored by Elevate Advanced Manufacturing. Elevate is a national partner of The Manufacturing Institute. The initiative works to change the perception of the manufacturing industry and inspire the next-generation of workers to pursue careers.

“Manufacturers were able to fill open positions after participating in past tours,” said Amy Lasack, director of Kirkwood Training and Outreach Services. “The college’s goal is to open students eyes to the career possibilities in these varied industries.”
