CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (June 11, 2018)–Kirkwood Community College will hold the first ever Rollin’ Rally on Saturday, June 23. The goal of the event is to build awareness and promote careers within the local transportation industry.

A part of the 2018 Freedom Festival, the Rollin’ Rally will feature various activities for children and their families including a big wheel obstacle course, transportation bingo, a University of Iowa driving simulator and a virtual reality machine. Prizes for the various activities will be given throughout the day. Those in attendance will also have the opportunity to get their pictures taken while exploring more than 30 different vehicles from local companies. In addition, children’s artwork from a recent drawing contest will be displayed on the side of an actual Kirkwood semi-truck.

According to Kirkwood Senior Director of Corporate Training Amy Lasack, the event is a collaboration between many different community entities.

“The Rollin’ Rally is a team effort involving some of the major players in our local transportation industry,” said Lasack. “Our Transportation Sector Board teamed up with over a dozen local employers as well as Kirkwood Community College to create this event. We’re looking to have some fun and really create some new interest in the industry by promoting the great careers and companies that we have right here in the Cedar Rapids area.”

As the event date gets closer, enthusiasm is building for all of those involved.

“There is genuine excitement surrounding the Rollin’ Rally,” said Chris Hummer, chair of the ICR Transportation and Logistics Sector Board. “Everyone involved, from Kirkwood to the sector board to all of the local businesses, is thrilled to be a part of it. It’s a chance to highlight the importance of transportation on our quality of life and to highlight some great career opportunities.”

While the event is free to the public, Meals on Wheels will be on hand to accept free will donations of cash or breakfast items, such as cereal, peanut butter and oatmeal.
