Two sessions set for Monday, May 24; About 70 full and part-time openings anticipated

With their opening set in less than two months, the management and staff of The Hotel at Kirkwood Center is looking for some good people to join their team. About 70 of them, in fact.

The Kirkwood Community College Human Resources department and Hotel staff will hold a career fair at the Kirkwood Center, part of The Hotel complex at the corner of Kirkwood BLVD and 76th Avenue SW. There will be two sessions, from 8 to 10 a.m. and 5 to 7 p.m. in the Kirkwood Center auditorium. Each session will open with a presentation from Hotel General Manager Lee Belfield and Sue Bennett of Kirkwood Human Resources, then continue with on-site application, screening, and application processing.

Belfield calls the new venture “an exciting opportunity to be a part of a rare kind” of educational process.

“We feel strongly about quality people sharing their skills and knowledge while personally learning, too. We are looking for a diverse group of people who understand and appreciate hospitality in its most rewarding sense. These will be people who genuinely like people, those who find satisfaction in helping others and go out of their way to be of service,” he said.

Belfield also emphasized that the 70 positions filled will include those with background in hospitality and culinary fields, but also those new to the industry who have a genuine interest in the potential of this new learning venture.

The Kirkwood Center’s new hotel will be the largest and most comprehensive teaching hotel at a community college in the U.S. Kirkwood students will assist a professional management and service team in a working and teaching lab environment. The Hotel’s key professional staff will serve as mentors and educators in their daily duties, with many teaching actual classes during the academic year.

Many of the positions open at the May 24 career fair will include Kirkwood benefits. Preference will be given to candidates who have successfully completed the core assessments of the Skills Advantage Work Keys program.
