David L. Hughes Appointed as Fire and Safety Training Manager

Kirkwood Community College has hired David L. Hughes as Fire and Safety Manager. The position is part of the college’s Kirkwood Training and Outreach Services area.

Hughes was formerly fire chief with the General Motors Powertrain operations at their Defiance, Ohio manufacturing facility. He is also a veteran of the U.S. Air Force, recently retired after 22 years of service. His final assignment was as training chief of the Airport Firefighter Course, Louis F. Garland Department of Defense Fire Academy in San Angelo, Texas.

Hughes earned an associate degree in Fire Science from the Community College of the Air force and holds a number of certificates from the International Fire Service Accreditation Congress.

In his new role, Hughes will manage Kirkwood’s training classes in OSHA regulation, fire and safety training. He will also oversee the college’s extensive equipment and facilities for fire, safety, hazardous materials and other training services.
