Kirkwood Student Productions earned one award this year
Each year they compete against the best, and each year they’re recognized for their successes. Kirkwood Community College’s student newspaper and television news organizations won 10 awards at the Iowa College Media Association’s annual meeting in Des Moines earlier this month.
“Every year these students continue to set the standard for high quality college journalism,” said Rose Kodet, Kirkwood Communications Media program coordinator. “They compete against two- and four-year colleges from around the state and place very well every spring.”
The college’s student newspaper, The Communiqué, earned nine awards. Kirkwood Student Productions, the student-run television news program, earned one. Last year students combined for 11 state awards. It’s a tradition Kodet said she’s proud to see continue.
“We get such great students who come through our program,” added Kodet. “This fall we just opened our brand new, high-tech television studio and a new lab for the Communiqué students. The combination of great students, eager to learn, with top-notch facilities hopefully means we’ll continue adding awards into the future.”
The Communiqué won two first place awards, including Best Headline Writing and Best Review. The paper also won second place awards for Best Editorial Leadership, Best Page 1, Best Photographic Portfolio; third place for Best Profile Story and honorable mention for Best Review and Best Op-Ed Section. The Communique also took second place for General Excellence. Kirkwood Student Productions, the television won honorable mention for Best Newscast.
