Unique training to give TrueNorth Transportation employees new industry perspective

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (May 6, 2025)-Kirkwood Community College and Cedar Rapids-based insurance and financial company TrueNorth are collaborating on a unique training designed to give TrueNorth employees a better understanding of what it takes to be a truck driver. The event, called Day in the Life of a Driver, is scheduled for Thursday, May 15, at the Kirkwood Continuing Education Training Center near the college’s main campus in Cedar Rapids.

According to the American Trucking Associations, more than 80% of U.S. communities depend solely on trucking for delivery of their goods and commodities. The Day in the Life of a Driver gives employees in TrueNorth’s Transportation division the opportunity to broaden their knowledge and understanding of one of America’s most important professions. The hands-on approach aims to foster innovative thinking to better serve clients in the fast-paced, heavily regulated sector.

To TrueNorth Companies Executive Vice President of Transportation Chris Gulker, the event will be a great way for employees to better understand the industry they serve.

“Experiencing the realities of life on the road, firsthand, is one of the most impactful ways our team can deepen their understanding of the transportation industry,” Gulker. “This immersive experience allows our colleagues to see the challenges and dedication behind the wheel, helping us better advocate for drivers and develop strategies that support their success.”

Kirkwood’s Corporate Training division has a long history of creating customized educational programs that align with the unique needs of its partners. For TrueNorth Companies, the college is well-positioned to deliver a meaningful training experience to support the development of TrueNorth’s workforce.

To Kirkwood Corporate Training Senior Project Manager Kori Hesser, the Day in the Life of a Driver program is a clear example of how Kirkwood delivers practical, partner-focused solutions that align with real-world workforce demands.

“This program is a great example of how Kirkwood supports organizations in reaching their objectives,” said Hesser. “Our strength has always been in tailoring training to meet the specific needs of diverse partners. When employees gain the skills and insights to do their jobs more effectively, it elevates the entire organization. For TrueNorth, this training will give staff a clearer picture of what it means to work in the transportation industry–ultimately allowing them to better support their clients. That’s the impact we aim for, and it’s something we’re truly proud of.”

Recognizing a 15-year legacy of collaboration, TrueNorth recently received the Presidents’ Award at Kirkwood’s Celebration of Success last month. This honor reflects the partners shared commitment to community growth and the empowerment of future leaders.
