May Student of the Month: Gianna Send

What is your background: My hometown is Dubuque, Iowa. This is where I grew up with my parents and six siblings. I graduated from Hempstead High School in 2023.

What brought you to Kirkwood and why?: I came to Kirkwood because it isn’t too far from home, and it’s affordable. I started in the fall of 2023 to pursue the paramedic program. The career just wasn’t the right fit for me, so I started exploring Kirkwood’s other options because I knew I wanted to finish a degree from here. I’m so happy I decided to stay! I’ve had nothing but great experiences with all of my professors, classmates, and other staff.

What is your program of study and what interests you about it?: My major is Human Services. I’ve always had a passion for helping people so when I discovered this was a program it seemed to be the perfect fit and align well with my values. In my classes we talk about how to help people meet their physical, social, and emotional needs so they can live fulfilling lives. This program has given me the chance to become more aware of the challenges people face in life, like mental health, disabilities, housing and food insecurity, and trauma. We also discuss the role that different social welfare policies and human service agencies play in communities. Everything I’ve learned will be so useful because I would like to go into social work. It is my mission to be an empathetic listener and caring advocate for my future clients, so they feel supported in whatever they’re facing.

Are you involved in anything on campus?: This year I had the opportunity to serve on Kirkwood’s Dance Marathon leadership team. We were able to fundraise over $25,000 for the kids at the University of Iowa Stead Family Children’s Hospital! Another group I’ve enjoyed being part of is Active Minds. We are a club that promotes mental health awareness. Our goal is to reduce stigma and help people get the support they need. Lastly, it’s been fun taking part in the Eagle Leadership Program here. I’ve met so many people, tried new things, and grown as a leader by participating in a variety of activities on campus.

What do you do for fun?: In my free time I like working out, reading, coloring, doing puzzles, watching movies, and being outside. Most of all, I enjoy spending time with my family and hanging out with my dog, Bentley!

Where do you see yourself in five years?: I honestly don’t know where I see myself in five years. Maybe I’ll be continuing my education. Otherwise, I hope to be out making a difference in the human service field. I would like to be working with women and kids in some way.
