Coach Muhl surveys the action

Kirkwood’s hall of fame coach nearing milestone few have achieved

Kirkwood Women’s Basketball Coach Kim Muhl is on the verge of making history. After the third ranked Eagles (18-3) beat Southeastern Community College 72-51 on Wednesday night, the team brought their coach within one win of 700.

Already voted into the National Junior College Athletic Association’s (NJCAA) Hall of Fame in 2011, Muhl (699-126) is currently fourth on the list among active coaches in the NJCAA. In his 24 seasons, he has led his teams to 20 regional finals, 14 national tournaments and 6 national titles. According to Assistant Coach Joe Hruska, Muhl’s accomplishments are just as impressive if not more impressive than that of four-year college coaches.

“At this level, you only get players for two years,” Hruska said. “The four-year schools have more time to develop student-athletes. We’ve been fortunate to have a lot of really good players come through here. Coach Muhl has done an excellent job of showing players how to find their strengths and get the most out of them.”

The Eagles are riding a 10-game win streak as they continue their campaign for another conference championship and beyond. While 700 wins is a level of success that a limited number of college coaches have reached, Muhl has other things on his mind.

“Kim doesn’t keep track of that kind of thing,” said Hruska. “He’s more focused on the season at this point.”

Muhl’s Eagles go for win number 700 this Saturday when they travel to Southwestern Community College (0-19.) Tip-off is scheduled for 1 p.m.
