Saturday, Oct. 13, at 1:30 p.m., at the Old Capital Museum

Former Iowa Rep. Jim Leach will be back in his home state speaking about the importance of the humanities and the role of humanities in a democratic society. Mr. Leach will present a lecture Saturday, October 13, at 1:30 p.m., in the Senate Chamber of the Old Capitol Museum in Iowa City.

Mr. Leach is currently the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) chairman.

Kirkwood Community College, along with the Central division of the Community College Humanities Association, is sponsoring this lecture. The program is open to the public and free of charge, but seating is limited.

Leach is well known for his support of cultural education, most recently for the “Bridging Cultures” grants he created during his tenure at the NEH. Kirkwood received a Bridging Cultures grant in September (http://www.kirkwood.edu/site/index.php?d=633&news_id=2018). He has also toured the country speaking about the importance of civility in public life. He served 30 years in the House of Representatives, representing what is now Iowa’s 2nd congressional district.

The NEH is an independent federal agency created in 1965. It is one of the largest funders of humanities programs in the United States.
