Student of the Month

October Student of the Month: Tia Slippy

What is your background?: My name is Tia and I have grown up here in Cedar Rapids. I have seven siblings and we were all homeschooled together. So, there was never a dull moment in our home.

What brought you to Kirkwood and why?: I started at Kirkwood to earn my Liberal Arts degree and then to hopefully transfer. During that time, I took some electives in the Digital Arts program, and fell in love with it! I’m currently finishing my second year in the program and will graduate this May, which is bittersweet. It is exciting to be moving on with my career, but I also love Kirkwood and I’m sad to leave.

What interests you about Digital Arts?: The Digital Arts program is absolutely wonderful! I am learning so much. When I first started in this program, I had never tried anything like it before. I never knew I would enjoy photography and videography like I do.

Are you involved in anything else on campus? If so, what and why?: On campus, I am very involved with Kirkwood Student Productions (KSP) and the Global Learning office. I love that KSP allows me to get hands on experience in a professional studio, and everyday I am there, I’m always learning something new. And it’s also super fun!

What got me interested in the Global Learning office is that I’ve always loved international students and people from around the world, especially since my mom is from overseas. I have always loved getting to know people and learning about other cultures.

Are you involved in anything off of campus?: Off campus, I am very involved with family, friends, and my church. I love spending time with people, whether it be family or friends. I also love that I get to serve my church and help with the kids program.

What do you do for fun?: For fun, I enjoy spending time with people, playing piano, singing, painting, and eating food. And yes, eating food is a hobby. 😉

Where do you see yourself in five years?: I don’t know where I see myself in five years exactly, but I know wherever I am, it will be somewhere where I can help people.
