After great start on the road, Eagles to host Ellsworth in home opener

Cedar Rapids, Iowa (March 25, 2016)-The Kirkwood baseball team has opened the 2016 season by going 13-7 on the road. The Eagles, who have won eight of their last nine games, now return home to host a doubleheader with Ellsworth, beginning at 1 p.m. today (3/25).

Head Baseball Coach Todd Rima is looking to guide his team to their first championship under his leadership. Rima, now in his fourth year as head coach at Kirkwood, went 62-53-1 in his first three seasons. This year he’s counting on a solid core of veterans to provide the leadership the team needs to get to the next level.

Two of the sophomores who have provided a spark to the team this year have also signed national letters of intent to play at the DI level. Pitcher Nick Drahozal, who came to Kirkwood as a walk-on last season, has signed with the Nebraska-Omaha Mavericks. Last year Drahozal emerged as the team’s ace as he finished with a 6-3 record and a 2.98 ERA. Shortstop Jack Fitzgerald will play at Houston Baptist next season. Last year Fitzgerald hit .288 with two homeruns and 18 RBIs in 36 games.

The Eagles will open the home slate of games today with a doubleheader versus Ellsworth (3-18) who have lost 12 straight games. The first pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
