Eagles look to improve on last season’s seventh place national finish

Cedar Rapids, Iowa (March 18, 2016)-The Kirkwood softball team has started the season strong by going 15-3 on the road. The fourth-ranked Eagles want to keep winning as the team opens the home part of the schedule on Friday (3/18) versus Williston State College.

Head Softball Coach Joe Yegge has proven that he knows how to win year after year. Over the previous three seasons, he has led his teams to an overall record of 154-21. Yegge finds the talent he needs and puts them in a position to be successful. He has coached 13 National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) and National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) All-Americans. So far this season is following the same pattern as the preceding campaigns.

Once again, the makeup of the team consists of proven veterans and talented newcomers. Returning to the Eagle’s lineup this year are sophomores Nicky Simpson (Conrad, Iowa), Katelyn Holub (Cedar Rapids, Iowa), Teagan Toft (Belvidere, Ill.), Allie Mengler (Walcott, Iowa), and Mallory Neubauer (Amana, Iowa). Simpson named a second team NJCAA and NFCA All-American after the 2015 season. All of the sophomores will be counted on to provide much needed leadership to the younger members of the squad.

According to the Kirkwood coaching staff, the freshmen class shows incredible potential. New to the team are Emilee Meyer (Muscatine, Iowa) Gabi Carter (Swisher, Iowa) Taylor Nearad (Solon, Iowa) Lexi Kinnaird (Tiffin, Iowa) Payton Mercer (Carlisle, Iowa) Morgan Frost (Gilbertville, Iowa) Maddie Hansen (Ely, Iowa) Lexi Ferrari (Rock Island, Ill.), and Miranda Kaste (Muscatine, Iowa).

The Eagles will face Williston State College (N.D.) in a doubleheader on Friday, March 18, beginning at 2 p.m.
