Kirkwood Community College has been named to the coveted Military Friendly Schools® list. The list honors the top 20 percent of colleges, universities and trade schools in the country that are doing the most to embrace America’s military service members, veterans and spouses as students and ensure their success on campus.

The announcement marks the fifth straight year that Kirkwood has been designated a Military Friendly School. Kirkwood Veteran Services Coordinator/School Certifying Official Vicki Terronez points to the 800-plus veterans currently enrolled at the college as proof that Kirkwood is going above and beyond for those who have served the country.

“Our veterans are forever telling me how appreciative they are to have the convenience and one-on-one assistance of a full-time VA rep.,” said Terronez. “At Kirkwood we help them navigate their VA processes and also assist with admission, registration, financial aid and referrals to other veteran resources. They like knowing where to go and who to talk with. It really helps ease the anxiety of transition.”

Inclusion on the 2014 list of Military Friendly Schools® shows Kirkwood Community College’s commitment to providing a supportive environment for military students. The college wants to provide the military community with transparent, world-class resources to assist in their education.

“This award affirms our mission to serve those who have served,” said Terronez. “This designation is based on many factors, however I feel a caring administration, faculty, staff and student body play a large role in providing the flexibility and support needed to promote a veteran friendly environment. I believe our high veteran numbers give credibility to our mission to provide our student veterans what is needed to succeed here at Kirkwood and beyond.”
