Kirkwood offers “Nursing Boot Camp” as quick way for nurses to return to active ranks

As Iowa’s health care system continues to respond to skilled nursing shortages, a program at Kirkwood Community College is set to help some licensed but off-duty nurses return to active roles.

Kirkwood’s Continuing Education division will hold a Nursing Boot Camp course April 23-24 to bring registered nurses up to speed with basic skills and the latest trends in the health care field. In a focused, two-day program the course offers a host of core skills in a refresher mode, along with crucial updates on current subjects the nurses would face in 2010 hospital, clinic and medical office settings.

The course will be taught at Kirkwood’s new Healthcare Simulation Center in Linn Hall on the Cedar Rapids campus. Hands-on skill sessions include starting and setting IVs, assessments, wound care, Foley/Straight catheters, phlebotomy, oxygen therapy, heart/lung sounds and many other skills. Presentations will also cover back care and body mechanics, infection control and safety, a medication update, plus a simulation activity designed specifically for boot camp participants.

The course will be held Friday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Saturday 8 a.m. to noon. Tuition for the course is $49 and will provide Nursing CEUs. This course is for registered nurses with an Iowa license, or those currently eligible for Iowa licensure. Participants should bring Iowa wallet licensure or other proof of licensure eligibility to the class.
