Chest Trauma Key Topic at Kirkwood’s EMS Conference

Cedar Rapids, Iowa (February 26, 2014)—Kirkwood Community College will be hosting its annual CODE 1 Emergency Care Conference March 7 – 8. First responders and other emergency healthcare providers will focus on chest trauma management among other topics.

According to the Iowa Department of Public Health heart disease is the number one killer of men and women in Iowa. Iowa has the 25th highest death rate from cardiovascular disease in the country. Kirkwood has invited Heather Davis, program director with UCLA’s Paramedic Education program to be the keynote speaker. She will be discussing and demonstrating key interventions for improving heart trauma survival.

The CODE 1 conference provides seminars on diverse medical topics, while presenting up to date information on global issues and corresponding expectations that are placed upon the EMS community. Conference topics include patient assessment, blast injuries, drug interactions and traumatic brain injuries in children. CODE 1 also provides an opportunity to earn continuing educations units.

Kirkwood Community College collaborates with Mercy Medical Center and Unity Point Healthcare—St. Luke’s Hospital, to offer Emergency Medical Responder, EMT, Advanced EMT and AAS Paramedic degree programs in a seven-county region. Its Regional Center for EMS Education also maintains clinical agreements with agencies throughout eastern Iowa including hospital, ambulance services, fire departments and public safety agencies.
