Commencement Details Set, May 14-15

Kirkwood Community College will soon honor more than 2,600 students taking positive steps for their futures. The college will hold commencement ceremonies for its college credit and GED/adult high school programs in mid-May. Both ceremonies will be held at the U.S. Cellular Center in downtown Cedar Rapids.

Kirkwood will confer more than 2,000 college credit degrees, diplomas and certificates for study in the past academic year. The college also has awarded more than 550 GED and adult high school diplomas in 2009-10.

The Kirkwood Adult High School Commencement is set for 7:30 p.m. Friday, May 14. Kirkwood President Mick Starcevich will address the students, with Vice President of Instruction Dr. Bill Lamb and Dean of Secondary Programs and Distance Learning Dr. Todd Prusha also officiating. The ceremonies will also feature two student graduates, Lydia Childers and Katherine Marcano.

Kirkwood College Commencement will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, May 15. Kirkwood Board of Trustees Chair Dr. Lois Bartelme will greet the audience on behalf of the college, with Dr. John Dawson, president of the Kirkwood Faculty Association sharing the instructor’s perspective on the students’ accomplishments. Alyssa Tendall of Nevada, Iowa will add comments on her student experiences. Tendall is a member of the Kirkwood Student Senate. She will receive her Associate of Arts degree at the May 15 ceremonies and will transfer to the University of Northern Iowa in the fall. President Starcevich will complete the speaker’s schedule with his remarks to the graduates.

Both ceremonies are free and open to the public.
