Kirkwood Community College will round out its Fine and Performing Arts series with two showcase concerts. The Kirkwood Concert Band will perform its spring program Friday evening, May 7 at 7:30 p.m. The following night the Kirkwood Concert Chorale performs, also at 7:30 p.m. Both events will be held in Ballantyne Auditorium on the main Kirkwood campus.

The Concert Band program will include some stalwart examples of the style, including a rousing march by American composer Henry Fillmore and a traditional German march called “Old Comrades.” The evening will also include a section of Edward Elgar’s Enigma Variations and a movement from a Haydn symphony. A series of selections from the musical Mary Poppins and the Rossini’s William Tell Overture will round out the performance. The Concert Band is directed by Dr. Beth Zamzow.

The Kirkwood Concert Band is a partnership of current college music students, alumni and other interested area volunteer musicians who appreciate the unique repertoire and style of concert band music. The band members have an age range spanning several decades, their common bond the enjoyment of performance. In addition to this performance, the band will perform at the college’s annual Commencement ceremonies Saturday morning, May 15 at the U.S. Cellular Center.

The Saturday evening Concert Chorale program will roam the world for musical themes, including traditional Israeli, Swedish and German folk songs, plus a contemporary arrangement of a traditional Korean song. Songs reflecting Ireland, Canada and the Sufi cultures of the Mideast are also included in the evening’s repertoire. The program will also include American songs as familiar as “Shenandoah.” Vocal Music Director Ray Salucka leads the Concert Chorale.

Tickets for the May 7 and 8 performances of the Kirkwood Concert Band and Chorale are $8 for adults and $5 for seniors and students with current ID. Kirkwood faculty, staff and students are admitted free. Tickets are available from Kirkwood Student Life in Iowa Hall, (319) 398-5578.
