Variety of choices, close to home

From Knitting for Beginners and Intermediates to Computer Basics for Ages 50+, the Kirkwood Iowa County Center in Williamsburg is charging up for a busy fall. Area residents can explore new ideas, learn fun crafts and build useful skills in a variety of new and returning courses.

• Super Second Saturday at Kirkwood’s Williamsburg Center will bring Iowa State senior Natalie Jenkins to teach area kids how to “Draw a Face that Looks like Someone.” This Sept. 12 event is sure to get kids involved in art. Natalie will show the tricks and tips to make face sketches people will appreciate. She will return October 10 for “Not Just Doodling,” sharing the art of shading geometric solids on a two-dimensional plane. Other events of interest to young people are a babysitting clinic and moped driver education, both on the calendar for September.

• For all those folks with a German heritage or just an interest in the language, Larry Rettig of South Amana offers a six-week course designed to guide participants through a little history of the German language, basics of its grammar, how it is related to English, and how dialects differ from standard German and other dialects. The class will meet at the Williamsburg Center on Monday evenings beginning Oct. 12.

• Michele Hahn is set to bring intermediate knitters to new skill levels as she works with each participant on an individual basis. She will also teach the basics of knitting to beginners. This three-week class is limited to eight participants and will start Tuesday evening, Oct. 6.

• Another class limited to eight for individualized attention is Karolyn Trumpold’s “Computer Basics for 50+.” This two-week course begins Oct. 27, designed for the beginner. Sessions will be conducted at a leisurely pace for those who have little to no experience with the computer.
