Five-time Tony winner makes its college debut Nov. 1-4

Mayhem, mix-ups and a lighthearted wedding mark the boisterous fun of The Drowsy Chaperone, winner of five 2006 Tony Awards. The musical makes its Kirkwood Community College debut the first weekend of November.

The Drowsy Chaperone is set for four performances, Nov. 1-4, in Ballantyne Auditorium. Show times Thursday, Friday and Saturday are at 7:30 p.m., with a matinee at 2 p.m. Sunday afternoon.

The fun in the performance begins when a die-hard, middle-aged musical fan plays his favorite record, a 1928 smash hit, “The Drowsy Chaperone,” and the show magically bursts to life. Suddenly the man finds himself immersed in the glamorous, hilarious tale of a celebrity bride and her uproarious wedding day.

The Drowsy Chaperone was nominated for 13 Tony Awards in 2006, winning five, including Best Musical Score, Best Scenic Design and Best Costume Design.

“Surely few productions have ever pulled an audience so immediately and unconditionally on their sides,” said Ben Brantley, New York Times chief theater critic in 2006.

“We always look to push our students by bringing in high-level theatrical productions to Kirkwood,” said Rick Anderson, Kirkwood theatre director. “We know by bringing in award-winning shows, that our students will be challenged, which in turn makes for a better show for our audience. The Drowsy Chaperone is another win-win for our students and the great local theater community.”

Anderson directs the play, with musical direction from Ray Salucka. Shelly Ford designed the scenes and lighting, with Annee Noah designing the costumes.

The book for the musical was written by Bob Martin and Don McKellar. Music and lyrics were written by Lisa Lambert and Greg Morrison.

Tickets for The Drowsy Chaperone are $10 for adults and $5 for seniors and students with current ID. Kirkwood students and employees are admitted free. Tickets are available from the Kirkwood Theatre box office in 336 Cedar Hall, or by calling (319) 398-5899, ext. 4331.
