A large group of students, staff and fans braved the cold last night to support the Kirkwood basketball teams. The Eagles swept in-state rivals North Iowa Area Community College last night 107-38 and 74-52.
The Kirkwood Community College women’s basketball team hit the century mark again last night as they cruised past NIACC 107-38. The Eagles shot 68 percent in the first half building a 61-12 advantage by halftime. Rachele Monroe led all scorers with 18 points in the balanced attack. Five other Eagles scored in double figures. Freshmen McKensey Long and Jayne Strand chipped in 16 and 15 points a piece. Lauren Thomas-Johnson and El Sara Greer tallied 11 points a piece and Breann Hill added 10 points and 9 assists. Thomas-Johnson had a team-high 9 assists in the win. The Eagle women improved to 14-6 overall and 8-0 in the conference.
The Eagle men improved to 16-1 overall and stayed un-defeated in league play (6-0) as they dominated NIACC 74-52 last night in Johnson Hall. Four Eagles scored in double figures. Ali Farokhmanesh led the Eagles with 17 points, including five 3-pointers. DaRell Crittendon hit three 3-pointers and chipped in 15 points, Joel Barkers tallied 12 and Jermain Davis finished with 10. Bryant Kucera hit the boards hard, grabbing 11 rebounds for the Eagles, who are currently the second-ranked team in the nation.
The Eagles see action again on Saturday against Southwestern Community College at Johnson Hall. The women will take the court at 4 p.m. followed by the men at 6.
