Matt Heaphy, deputy convener of the American Coalition for the International Criminal Court (AMICC/UNA), will give the main address at an International Day of Justice at Kirkwood Community College on Thursday, July 17. The event is sponsored by Kirkwood, Amnesty International, and the Iowa Division, Linn County Chapter, and Kirkwood Student Alliance of the United Nations Association.

Mayor Kay Halloran has issued a proclamation of July 17, 2008 as the International Day of Justice for Cedar Rapids. Heaphy works for the American Network of the International Criminal Court Alumni (ANICCA), a non-governmental agency. He has served as an associate legal officer in the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia at the Hague and is a member of the California State Bar Association.

The events of Cedar Rapids International Day of Justice will take place from 7 to 9 p.m. in the West Dining Room of Iowa Hall at Kirkwood and are free to the public.

In addition to the main address, the program will include a 10-minute video on the origin and development of the International Criminal Court, produced by Amnesty International. Kirkwood students and faculty who have experienced war crimes directly or lived in regimes where such war crimes were carried out in Africa, Asia, and South America will also tell their stories through videotaped interviews.
