Schedule includes famed guest artists and “very timely” musical

The Kirkwood Community College Arts & Humanities department has announced its 2008-09 Fine and Performing Arts schedule. Renowned guest musicians, classic theatre and a visiting artist from the Middle East are all part of the events from September through next May.

The series features a musical whose appearance on the roster now will resonate with extra meaning for many eastern Iowa audience members. Opening the Kirkwood Theatre season is Big River, the hit Broadway show based on Mark Twain’s Huckleberry Finn. The musical will feature guest artist and Iowa native Mark Wilson performing in the central role of Jim. Wilson is currently music professor at Monmouth University and voice teacher for Ridgewood Conservatory, both in New Jersey. With music and lyrics by Roger Miller, the show will be performed over two weekends, Oct. 24 – Nov. 2.

The jazz concert line-up will feature three acts acclaimed in global jazz circles. Guitarist Fareed Haque will perform a guest stint Nov. 22 and trombonist Wycliffe Gordon takes the Ballantyne stage April 18. Both artists will share the program with Kirkwood student ensembles and the C.R. Jazz Big Band. Internationally renowned a cappella artists Vox One will also lead teaching clinics and perform with Kirkwood student vocalists on March 6. Local favorites McMurrin & Johnson will keep an annual tradition going Sept, 27 when they headline the 9th annual Blues Concert in Ballantyne Auditorium.

In fine art exhibits, the season opens with a family affair. Joan Liffring-Zug Bourret and Madeline Roemig-Bendorf will present a dual exhibit Sept. 1-Oct. 1. Another arts event of note is a visit by Persian art expert Jafar Mogadam. A Feb. 26 reception will kick off a month’s exhibit of ceramic and tile works to coincide with a Persian art exhibit at the Cedar Rapids Museum of Art.
