Student-athletes join in college-wide effort, raise more than $2,700 for cancer awareness

On October 27, the color pink could be seen throughout the Kirkwood gymnasium as the Eagles took on Division I Indian Hills for Dig Pink Night. This event is hosted by numerous high school and college volleyball teams nationwide to raise money for Breast Cancer awareness and research. Money raised benefits Side-Out Foundation, a Virginia-based non-profit dedicated to cancer awareness, education and research.

The nights activities included: Kirkwood women’s basketball team raising money by selling cookies, softball sold 50/50 raffle tickets, Student Senate sold Breast Cancer T-shirts and half of the door sales were donated to Side-Out. The Student Senate also sponsored three bake sales prior to the event.

“With Athletics fundraising $531, ($77 for cookies, $123 in the raffle and $331 from the volleyball team) we are up to $2,772.80 for our Dig Pink Campaign,” said Student Life Coordinator Seth Vander Tuig.

Along with Dig Pink Night, seven sophomores were honored as the Eagles competed in their last home game. Showing the home crowd an exciting performance, the women swept the Warriors with an impressive 3-0 win.

Between the second and third game, Kirkwood Student Life held a Guinness Book of World Record attempt at “the most people blowing a chewing gum bubble simultaneously.” Participants had to blow a bubble, keeping it intact for 30 seconds before popping it; or their bubble couldn’t be counted in the attempt.

“With bubblegum donated by Hershey’s (Bubble Yum), we had 352 participants attempt their bubble with 304 participants successfully blowing a bubble,” said Vander Tuig.

Both the Kirkwood and Indian Hills Volleyball teams participated in the record attempt. The Guinness Book of World Records will review the event in order to confirm the record.

The #15 Eagles compete next in the NJCAA Division II National Tournament in Wisconsin Dells, WI on November 18-20.
