Kirkwood Honors Leadership and Innovation

2012 Distinguished Alumni Awardee Michael J Gould

The second annual Celebration of Success, honoring Kirkwood Community College’s distinguished alumni, business partners and leaders in higher education, is Thursday, April 4, at 6 p.m., at The Hotel at Kirkwood Center.

This year’s award recipients are:

Jeff Mitchell, Trustee’s Award. The Trustee’s Award is presented to honor outstanding leadership in higher education. Mitchell, dean of Industrial Technologies, has led initiatives in renewable and sustainable energy instruction, and a new series of short-term training modules that begin with basic instruction and gradually stack into a credential or degree program.

Diamond V, President’s Award. The President’s Award is presented in recognition of extraordinary support of academic programs and student success at Kirkwood. Diamond V and Kirkwood share a $1.66 million complex, the nation’s first research center shared by a private ag company and a community college.

The company also contributed to the college’s modern swine confinement operation.

Mickey Kinzenbaw, Distinguished Alumni. Kinzenbaw, who lives in Ankeny, Iowa, is a firefighter/paramedic for the Des Moines Fire Department. The 2005 Kirkwood graduate was selected to receive the Distinguished Alumni Award for his exceptional success in community involvement and leadership. While at Kirkwood, he pursued a degree in Fire Science Management.

Delaine Petersen, Distinguished Alumni. Petersen, of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, is the executive director of ARC of East Central Iowa. She was selected to receive the Distinguished Alumni Award for her extraordinary success in business, community involvement and leadership. She graduated Kirkwood in 1979 with a degree in Liberal Arts.

Julie Poeltler, Distinguished Alumni. Poeltler, of University Heights, Iowa, is owner and manager of Julie’s Fountain of Flowers, Lone Tree. She earned her Floral Careers degree from Kirkwood in 1972 and was selected to receive the Distinguished Alumni Award for her prominent success in academia and career.
