More than 150 top scholars recognized in annual program

Kirkwood Community College took an afternoon to honor their best and brightest on April 8. An afternoon reception and program recognized 151 current students as the Outstanding Student class of 2009. Kirkwood President Mick Starcevich and academic leaders honored the group in a reception at the Kirkwood Center for Continuing Education on the Cedar Rapids campus.

The students were chosen by nomination of faculty in all of Kirkwood’s Arts & Sciences and Applied Science programs over the past academic year. Each student was chosen for exceptional academic work, plus cooperation and contributions beyond their classroom studies.

Among the speakers was Ag Science Professor Cherylann Stewart, who called the honorees “Olympians of our classrooms” during the year.

“My fellow faculty members and I were asked to choose those exceptional students who really make a difference. When they thought hard work, and dedication – they thought of you. When they thought of working cooperatively with others–they thought of you. We are very proud of you—for all you contributed to this year, ‘Stewart said.
