Funding Cuts Change Scope of Training

Cedar Rapids, Iowa (September 22, 2014)—Kirkwood Community College will host the 28th Annual Fire School, September 27 – 28, in collaboration with the Central Iowa Training Association (CITA). This year new training will be offered for small crew response teams.

Across the country firefighting jobs are being cut for lack of funding. Volunteer agencies respond to emergencies in 70 percent of communities. Depending on the time of day response teams can vary from a full crew to just a couple of firefighters.

“The fire service prides itself on doing more with less, “ says Kirkwood Program Developer, Kim Fensterman. “However, it is critical to perform fire ground tasks with fewer numbers while still being safe. Our training will focus on that.”

CITA-Kirkwood Fire School is two days of hands-on training at Kirkwood’s main campus. The school draws on average 800 students from Iowa, Illinois, Missouri, Minnesota and Wisconsin.

Additional new courses offered address structural integrity, firefighter mental health, and search and rescue. Certification examinations are available during the two-day seminar. Preregistration is required.

Iowa volunteer and combination fire departments receive partial grand funding from the Iowa Volunteer Firefighter Training Fund to attend.

CITA-Kirkwood Fire School is one of the largest in the state. In addition to training, demonstrations will take place, involving dozens of fire, ambulance and other emergency vehicles. Class sizes are limited. For more information and to register visit www.kirkwood.edu/fireschool or call 800-332-8833.
