A past Kirkwood Spring Jazz Concert

A well-known fixture on the Chicago jazz scene will showcase his talents at Kirkwood’s Spring Jazz Concert. The John Carlson Quartet, now based in eastern Iowa, is the headlining act at this year’s performance.

The concert is Friday, March 8, at 7:30 p.m., in Ballantyne Auditorium. Kirkwood Instrumental Jazz Music Director Timothy Feldkamp will lead the Kirkwood Jazz Combos and the John Carlson Quartet. KCCK’s Dennis Green will host the program.

Originally from Peoria and Chicago, Ill., John Carlson played professionally in the Chicago area for 18 years, backing entertainers such as Doc Severinsen, Lou Rawls, Maureen McGovern, The Four Tops, The Temptations and Bill Cosby.

John also worked for 10 years as a full-time staff music director and arranger at Willow Creek Community Church, one of the largest and most innovative contemporary churches in the country. John’s CD “Expressions” has been met with wide acclaim both in churches and jazz circles, and is available on iTunes and Amazon.com.

Now living in Tiffin, Iowa, John works as a freelance arranger and composer for several music publishing companies, and also provides custom arrangements for churches, schools and professional groups. He plays locally in several ensembles, including the CR Jazz Big Band, as well as in Chicago.

Playing music from Gillespie to Gershwin and Porter to Rollins, Kirkwood’s jazz combos will play six selections. The John Carlson Quartet will follow with songs that celebrate the music of Dave Brubeck and Paul Desmond.

Tickets for the concert are $10 for adults and $5 for seniors and students with current ID. Kirkwood students and employees are admitted free. For advance tickets, please call (319) 398-5899 ext. 4331.
