Kirkwood students read at Prairie Ridge Elementary for America Reads Day

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (October 21, 2016)-A group of Kirkwood Community College students helped celebrate America Reads Day at Prairie Ridge Elementary in Cedar Rapids on Friday.

Students from all across Kirkwood’s campus read various children’s books to attentive and excited elementary students. The group included Kirkwood student ambassadors, athletes and international students.

Now in its 20th year, America Reads is part of a national challenge to improve literacy in elementary school-age children. The program is a collaboration between the Cedar Rapids Community, College Community, Linn-Mar, Marion Independent, and Xavier Catholic school districts as well as Summit School and the Cedar Rapids, Ely, Fairfax, Hiawatha and Marion libraries. Over the course of two days, members of the Cedar Rapids community participate to help teach the importance of reading and literacy to young students.

More than 2,500 volunteers read to an average of 16,000 students each year.
