Cedar Rapids, Iowa (May 19, 2015)-Kirkwood Community College and the University of Iowa Tippie College of Business signed a Business Administration Associate of Applied Science (A.A.S) articulation agreement today at The Hotel at Kirkwood Center in Cedar Rapids. The arrangement is the first of its kind between the two institutions.

Signing the agreement creates a business-focused education pathway for Kirkwood students to continue their education at Tippie College of Business. Those who have successfully earned an A.A.S. degree in business administration, and have met the minimum admission and general education requirements agreed upon, will have the opportunity to complete a bachelor’s degree in business, within a given area of specialization.

According to Kirkwood Business and Information Technology Department Coordinator Chris King, students will have a few options after earning the two-year degree.

“The Business Administration A.A.S. degree, prepares individuals to enter the workforce and/or transfer to one of Iowa’s premier business schools,” said King. “Graduates from this program may choose to use their marketable credential to find a job, or transfer with junior status to Tippie College of Business. This program exemplifies Kirkwood’s commitment to providing both career technical education and transfer opportunities to students. Kirkwood is proud to present this exclusive agreement with its partners at the University of Iowa.”

Previously, students who were looking to transfer into the Tippie College of Business could do so with the 2 Plus 2 Liberal Arts transfer agreement between the two institutions. That option still exists for those who choose to go that route. However, according to Tippie College of Business Associate Director of Advising and Registration Vicki Vavra, the new agreement gives the student a more streamlined approach to a four-year business degree.

“The 2 Plus 2 agreement does allow students to enter the Tippie College of Business directly but the tradeoff is that they take more general education courses than are required by this college, allowing for fewer electives,” said Vavra. “The A.A.S. degree is an additional path for students interested in transferring to Iowa that fits well with Tippie requirements and includes some additional business options.”

The new degree program took effect as soon as the agreement was signed.
