Iowa City Campus involves community partners and citizens in cultural programs

Iowa City, Iowa (September 15, 2015)-Kirkwood Community College, along with the Iowa City Public Library and the University of Iowa Libraries, will present Latino Americans: 500 Years of History through a grant-funded series of programs.

The $10,000 grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities will be used for several public events, featuring film and video showings, public forums and dialogue with artists, filmmakers and scholars on the topic of Latino life and culture.

The series begins with a showing of two documentaries from critically acclaimed director Luis Argueta. Wednesday, September 23, the documentary abUSed: The Postville Raid, will be presented at 6:30 p.m. in the Iowa City Public Library. The next day, another Argueta documentary, ABRAZOS, will be shown at the Kirkwood Iowa City Campus at 6:30 p.m. Director Argueta will attend both showings and participate in dialogue with attendees after the films.

On October 28, author Dr. Santiago Vaquera-Vasquez will present a reading of his book, One Day I’ll Tell You the Things I’ve Seen, at Prairie Lights Bookstore in Iowa City at 7 p.m. The following day at 6:30 p.m., he will lead discussion at the Kirkwood Iowa City Campus after the viewing of “Peril and Promise”, the first episode from the PBS documentary Latino Americans: 500 Years of History. The award-winning documentary chronicles the history of Latinos in the United States from the 16th Century to the present day.

The series will also feature a March 5 presentation from the Mujeres Latinas collection of the Iowa Women’s Archives in the University of Iowa’s Main Library. The community workshop with library archivists will begin at 11 a.m.

All programs offered are free to the public. For more information and updates on the Latino Americans: 500 Years program series, visit www.guides.kirkwood.edu/la500.
