Cedar Rapids, Iowa (March 5, 2014)—Kirkwood Community College has transformed the former Midland Forge Plant into a training hub for fire, safety, OSHA, water/wastewater and truck driving certifications. It is now known as the Kirkwood Continuing Education and Training Center (KCETC.)
The facility that housed Midland Forge, the 66-year manufacturer of industrial shackles, chains and rigging gear, was purchased by Kirkwood in 2011. KCETC utilizes the more than 100,000 square foot building for customized industrial training and education for area employers as well as truck driving school. Kirkwood goes as far as creating company environments to offer virtual training offsite. Companies like CRST International, the Duane Arnold Energy Center, Quaker Oats, Rockwell and Whirlpool Corporation have taken advantage of the opportunity.
“We are a resource for area business and industry,” said Senior Director of Corporate Training Amy Lasack. “Companies look to us to provide classes and skills training to build a stronger workforce, especially for positions where there’s an applicant shortage.”
KCETC has the only burn facility in Cedar Rapids to train first responders from the surrounding seven counties. The facility enables fire fighters to train using a controlled fire and simulate actual response and rescue missions. Rescue from a confined space is another course commonly enrolled.
So the public can take a closer look, KCETC is hosting an open house. Guests are invited to tour the facility on Thursday, March 20, from 4 to 5 p.m. Refreshments will be provided. KCETC is located at 101 50th Avenue SW in Cedar Rapids.
