Kirkwood, UW-Platteville in New Articulation Pact

Agreement will allow Kirkwood grads to transfer all general education credits to UWP programs

[PLATTEVILLE]- University of Wisconsin-Platteville students transferring from Kirkwood Community and two other area two-year colleges will now have their general education requirements met. The UWP University Undergraduate Curriculum Committee recently passed a new agreement, which makes this possible.

In the past, credits were transferred from these campuses course by course. Because of this, some credits did not always transfer. With the new agreement, students with an Associate of Science or Associate of Arts degree from Kirkwood or EICC will automatically have their general education credits transfer as a package. The exceptions are gender, ethnic and international credits. If students did not take gender, ethnic or international courses while at Kirkwood or EICC, they must complete them at UWP.

“This will make the process easier for incoming transfer students. It hopefully will also encourage more students to earn a four year degree,” said Jodi McDermott, assistant dean of the UWP College of Business, Industry, Life Science and Agriculture.

These students may also take advantage of UWP’s Tri-State Initiative program, which allows qualified Iowa and Illinois residents to attend UWP under reduced tuition rates.

“This is another excellent step forward for our graduates,” said Ken Riha, dean of Business and Information Technologies at Kirkwood. “We have plenty of students who come to us from northeast Iowa and the surrounding region. In addition, the fine programs at Platteville could also be a good match for their four-year education goals. We see this as another win/win for our whole region.”

UWP already accepts general education credits as a package from students with Associate of Arts or Associate of Science degrees from UW Colleges, Illinois community colleges and Northeast Iowa Community College. The general education requirements at Kirkwood and the other Iowa community colleges are similar, which was another reason for making the agreement.

Credits toward a specific major are still evaluated course by course, however, UWP does have program articulations with some departments. This means that UWP and the transfer college have agreed on courses that are transferable for specific majors.

General education credits are also transferable. To transfer to UWP, students must have a 2.0 or higher G.P.A. in college transfer courses and be in good academic standing.
