Kirkwood Trustees chair saluted by Corridor Business Journal as 2010 honoree

A lifetime of dedication to learning and leadership will be recognized this March as Dr. Lois Bartelme is inducted into the Corridor Business Journal’s 2010 Women of Influence. The area business publication will honor her and eight other women in ceremonies Thursday evening, March 11 at the Kirkwood Center for Continuing Education.

Bartelme is chair of the Kirkwood Community College Board of Trustees, a post she has held since 2004. She has served on the Kirkwood leadership board since 1995. In a profile published March 8, a CBJ profile said:

“On first blush, Lois Bartelme’s career seems a bit eclectic. When she describes it, however, it all seems of a piece. The through line, she says, is education. ‘If you look at what I’ve done, even when not as an educator, it has been in the pursuit of the opportunity to learn and help other people to learn,’ she said.

Bartelme has worked for some of the Corridor’s largest entities, including The University of Iowa, Rockwell International (now Rockwell Collins), APAC Teleservices and McLeodUSA, in addition to Kirkwood. Earlier experiences included training for military personnel both in the U.S. and in Europe. In addition to her Kirkwood Board of Trustees role, she is a member of the part-time faculty of Capella University, a Minnesota-based online education group.

Lois Bartelme says her desire to be a community college trustee was a long-time goal. A minor in her doctoral studies was in community college studies, and she worked closely with Kirkwood and other two-year schools in her University of Iowa role. She says the responsibility she feels to share her influence effectively is huge.

“It is important to be a role model for other women,” she said. “Women can do anything, and it’s important that they know that.”
