Cedar Rapids, Iowa (April 1, 2015)-Both of the Kirkwood men’s and women’s basketball teams landed multiple players on postseason awards lists. The recognition for their stellar play was on a regional as well as national level.
Two Eagles were announced as All-Americans. Sophomore Jordan Ashton (sophomore, Mt. Pleasant, Iowa) was named to the men’s first team All-American squad. Guard Anna Martensen (sophomore, Belvidere, Ill.) was named to the women’s second team.
The Kirkwood women finished fifth in the nation with a 31-6 record. Head Coach Kim Muhl once again guided a talented squad to a regional championship – his 16th at Kirkwood. Seven Eagles from the women’s team were named All-Region. Anna Martensen, post Cassidy Clark (sophomore, Coal Valley, Ill.) and guard Kristen Larson (sophomore, Belvidere, Ill.) all made first team All-Region. The second team featured guard Tyra Polite (sophomore, Upper Darby, Pa.), post Ariel Sneed (sophomore, Harvey, Ill.) and guard Taylor Silva (Bellevue, Neb.). Post Peyton Bockholt (sophomore, LaPorte City, Iowa) made the third team.
In Bryan Petersen’s second season as head coach, the Kirkwood men finished second in the conference and compiled a 25-7 record. They fell in the Region XI championship game to rival DMACC. Six Eagles on the men’s team earned All-Region status. Jordan Ashton and forward Joe Tagarelli (sophomore, Bayside, Wis.) made the first team. Guards Matt Lassen (sophomore, Marion, Iowa), Ajay Lawton (sophomore, Westfield Ind.) and Hunter Rhodes (freshman, Canton, Ill.) were announced for the second team. Forward Ronald Singleton was Honorable Mention.
