What is your background?: I was born in Iowa City, but when I was two, my family and I moved to where I grew up: North Liberty. My immediate family consists of my mother, Christina, father, Derek, and older brother, Kobe. I went to Liberty High School, where I played football, threw shot put, and wrestled. I received my Seal of Biliteracy in Spanish there as well! I participated in Kirkwood’s “College course in high school” program during my senior year, taking the Emergency Medical Technician course. Through that, I was able to obtain my EMT certification before I graduated!
What brought you to Kirkwood and why?: I chose Kirkwood for its affordability and because it has amazing transfer pathways to other colleges. College tuition is expensive, and I was looking for a college where I could complete my Gen Ed courses while saving a bit of money. That’s when I found Kirkwood! When I was first considering enrolling here, I learned about all the different things Kirkwood has to offer. Financial assistance, academic advising, student life events, and so much more! What I loved was seeing how amazing of a community Kirkwood is. Students and faculty alike are all friendly and welcoming. That’s when I knew Kirkwood would be the perfect spot for me!
What is your program of study and what interests you about it?: I’m here for my Gen Ed courses and all the STEM courses I can take. However, I aspire to enter the healthcare field and study medicine. When I’m done at Kirkwood, I plan to transfer to the University of Iowa, where I’ll continue to get my bachelor’s degree in human anatomy and physiology. After that, I plan on attending Iowa’s physician assistant program to become a PA! Medicine has always been something I’ve been interested in. It’s the reason that I decided to take the EMT program when I was in high school. Being able to be there and care for someone while they’re sick or injured is an amazing thing. It makes me proud to know that I’m saving lives.
Are you involved in anything on campus?: I’m part of Kirkwood’s Student Leadership Council, the Eagle Leadership Program, Dance Marathon, and Salt Company. The student leadership council is a group of students who plan and host all of Kirkwood’s many events around campus. From determining the type of event, when to host it, what food to have, and lots more, they’re the beating heart of Kirkwood student life. The Eagle Leadership program is for those who wish to improve their leadership skills and learn what it means to be a leader. Dance Marathon is a student-led fundraiser to raise money for children’s hospitals and the families of children who are sick or injured. And last but not least, The Salt Company! Salt Company is the college ministry at Veritas church in downtown Cedar Rapids and aims to reach college students with the gospel and further their connection with god.
What do you do for fun?: I LOVE driving around Cedar Rapids and finding new, fun spots to do things at. Any place works! Whether it be pickle palace to play some pickleball, a nice restaurant to grab a bite to eat, or a park to sit and watch the stars at night, I love exploring Cedar Rapids! If I’m not out and about, you usually find me chilling out at my apartment. I always enjoy a good movie night, especially if I’m wrapped up in blankets with a cup of hot chocolate. Christmas and horror movies are my favorites! I also have an Xbox, which I find some occasional time for. I usually play story or single-player games, though I’ve recently played first-person shooters.
Where do you see yourself in five years?: In five years, I see myself enrolled in Iowa’s PA program and living in Iowa City. Though it’ll be tough, I’m excited about the upcoming challenge! I’ll also most likely be working as a CNA at either St. Luke’s Hospital or UIHC.
