Original Story:

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (July 20, 2020)–Kirkwood Community College has opened offices to assist students registering for fall classes on the institution’s main campus in Cedar Rapids as well as the Iowa City Campus. Main campus office openings include the student service departments of Admissions, Financial Aid, Enrollment Services, Academic Advising, Student Assistance, and all academic departments. The Iowa City Campus One Stop office is also open which includes Admissions, Enrollment, Financial Aid, and Academic Advising services.

As the fall semester approaches, many students have questions or need assistance in taking the necessary steps to enroll in classes. With offices opening on Wednesday, students will now be able to get assistance in-person, which can help them through the registration process and into the courses they need.

To Kirkwood President Lori Sundberg, the college is making sure it serves every student in the best way for each individual.

“Some students prefer to take care of registration on their own, others like to come to campus and meet with college staff,” said Sundberg. “We’re opening these offices to give those students an opportunity to do just that. Honestly, having students on campus and excited to enroll will be a welcome sight. Serving students is what we do.”

Kirkwood has prepared to hold classes this fall in a variety of ways depending on the needs of students. Options include in-person, online and hybrid educational formats. For classes held on-campus, new safety measures will be taken including requiring masks and adherence to social distancing guidelines.

According to Sundberg, reopening campus for the fall is a balancing act of catering to student needs and providing a safe, productive learning environment.

“After the virus forced us online in the spring, we heard from many students who liked online classes as well as those that did not,” said Sundberg. “That’s why we’re offering so many class format options this fall. However, we wanted to do it in a safe and smart way. We’ve taken extra precautions to make sure our students can take classes in-person and feel comfortable doing it. For those students who want to stay online, we have that too. There’s really something for everyone.”
