September Student of the Month: Layle McClenathan

What is your background?: I grew up in the small town of Brooklyn, Iowa. I attended high school at the BGM Community School District and was involved with many extracurricular activities in high school including various sports and clubs. I was also very involved in 4H and FFA throughout my high school career.

What brought you to Kirkwood and why?: I always knew I wanted to obtain a career within the agriculture industry and Kirkwood seemed to be the best fit. I toured the campus a few times my senior year and was able to meet with the professors. This college has a close community feel that appealed to me.

What is your program of study and what interests you about it?: I am very interested in the production side of the agriculture industry and am currently working toward an associate degree in Agriculture Production Management. The classes offered in this program have helped me gain the knowledge needed to successfully manage and run a farming business.

Are you involved in anything off of campus?: When I am not attending classes, I often spend my time doing homework, working, spending time with friends, or helping at my family farm.

What do you do for fun?: I enjoy taking my dog on long nature walks, hanging out with friends, and going home to help on our family farm.

Where do you see yourself in five years?: In the next five years, I can see myself graduating from Kirkwood with a degree in Ag Production Management. I will start my career in the agriculture industry upon graduating, while continuing to work at my family farm back home.
