Event organized in memory of former student Austin Maier

This Sunday, Kirkwood Ag Sciences students will host a special Open Feeder Calf Show. While they put their classroom skills and knowledge to work with best practices in the beef production industry, many minds will be more focused on a former student who won’t be there.

The students organized the show to honor the memory of Austin Maier, a Kirkwood Ag Science student who died in 2008, just weeks before he would have graduated. Long-time Ag Science Office Associate Sue Robinson said Maier “was a true friend to all he met.” She said he was a role model who inspired his fellow students to create the show.

“Austin was from rural Johnson County and was very active in 4-H, FFA and Kirkwood Ag activities, as well as in his home church. He devoted his life and studies to showing livestock and made many friends along the way. We are dedicating this Hoof N Horn feeder calf show to his memory,” Robinson said.

The third annual event at the Kirkwood Tippie Beef Center will begin Sunday, Oct. 17 with check-ins from 8 to 10 a.m. The show starts at noon, with both local and out-of-state exhibitors welcome. A concession stand will also be available during the event.
