Two Estate Gifts to Kirkwood Foundation

The Kirkwood Community College Foundation recently received two estate gifts, creating more scholarship opportunities for future students at the college.

The Foundation received more than $350,000 from the estate of Mary Jeanne Palmer, formerly of Cedar Rapids. These funds will create the Mary Jeanne Palmer Memorial Endowed Scholarship to support international study abroad for Kirkwood Community College students.

A gift of $196,880 from the estate of Margaret Jane Sayers, formerly of Belle Plaine, has been designated for the Orville (Bill) and Jane Sayers Endowed Scholarship at the Kirkwood Foundation, established by the couple in 2001. After many years of teaching in Des Moines, Mrs. Sayers and her husband retired to their hometown of Belle Plaine. First consideration for the scholarship will be given to students from Belle Plaine or Blairstown, Iowa.

Both estate gift endowments will provide scholarship funds in perpetuity.

The Kirkwood Foundation now has more than 120 endowed scholarship funds. The college expects to provide about $1.88 million in direct student support for the 2010-11 academic year.
