Forbes is UI graduation speaker; Simmons article published in national journal

Two members of the Kirkwood Community College Nursing faculty have been chosen as exemplars for their profession. One will be recognized for writing and scholarship while another will give the commencement address at a partner university.

Nursing Instructor Debra Forbes has been selected as the graduation speaker for the RN-BSN graduation at the University of Iowa’s College of Nursing. The May 15 ceremony will confer degrees for 91 UI Nursing graduates.
Forbes will share her thoughts on “The Art of Nursing” as her commencement theme.

Nursing Instructor Laurie Simmons has been selected to receive the Nephrology Nursing Journal’s New Author Writing Award for 2009 for her published article, “Dorthea Orem’s Self Care Theory as Related to Nursing Practice in Hemodialysis.”

Simmons will receive her honor at the National Convention for Nephrology Nursing in San Antonio, Texas May 4. She brought her professional experience in medical/surgical nursing to a teaching role in the Kirkwood Nursing faculty in 2006.

“The environment here at Kirkwood has encouraged me to develop professionally and personally. Our Health Science department and my immediate supervisors have been supportive in my endeavors. We have a great atmosphere for encouraging professional growth,” Simmons observed.
