Kirkwood Community College will bring in the school year with an annual celebration of Welcome Week. This full week of free food and events will be held August 23-27 for new and returning students.

“Welcome Week is the kick-off week to a great school year full of fun activities,” said Tera Pickens, Kirkwood Admissions advisor.

To begin the week of festivities, Kirkwood will host the 10th Annual Movin’ & Shakin’ from 2-5 p.m. outside Iowa Hall. Movin’ & Shakin’ provides an opportunity to meet other students, as well as look around campus to get familiarized with everything Kirkwood has to offer. There are games, free food, music, coupons and information on campus activities. Students can look for a part-time job with many local businesses on hand and get involved in the 60 clubs and organizations offered campus wide.

“We expect a very large student turn out again for the event. Now that it corresponds with the first day of class we have seen the attendance numbers soar,” said Pickens.
Free pizza will be offered on day two of Welcome Week at 11 a.m. in the second floor of Cedar Hall. All area student apartment complexes will hold Roomie Night from 5-7 p.m. Students have a chance to meet others living in their complexes and get more information on what events are offered to tenants.

On Wednesday, free popcorn will be served during the day at Linn Hall, and for the first time during Welcome Week, an outdoor movie night will be held at 8:30 p.m. on the Kirkwood softball field. In case of rain, the backup location is Ballantyne Auditorium.

The free food continues Thursday with ice cream served at 11 a.m. in the second floor of Iowa Hall, and Hypnotist Brian Imbus will provide the entertainment for the night at 7 p.m. in Ballantyne Auditorium.

As an ending to the first week of classes, walking tacos will be offered on Free Food Friday at 11:30 a.m. outside Iowa Hall.

Welcome Week is a small taste of activities students can expect throughout the year. “The Student Life office is already deep in planning entertainment for the entire fall and spring semesters, to keep the fun going all year long,” said Pickens.
