An incredible harvest

Through a landscape covered with snow and ice, green thumbs around eastern Iowa have their chance to focus on the upcoming gardening season. Registration for the Winter Gardening Fair at Kirkwood Community College is now open.

Participants will chose from more than 45 workshops during the one-day event, held Saturday, Feb. 16, from 8:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m. The $49 tuition covers four workshops, the keynote address, a box lunch and coffee.

This year’s keynote speaker, Pat Stone, is known as the “Garrison Keillor of Gardening.” He mixes practical advice with humor, sharing the three things gardeners should never do and the three most important things gardeners should do. He is a co-author of “Chicken Soup for the Gardener’s Soul.”

Highlights of the 2013 Winter Gardening Fair include five vertical gardening and five water gardening workshops. Others workshops include topics ranging from drought-hearty plants and bonsai trees to garden photography and herbs.

Visit www.kirkwood.edu/ce to register for the fair. It will be held in Cedar and Benton Hall located on Kirkwood’s main campus in Cedar Rapids. The Winter Gardening Fair is presented by Iowa State University & Extension Outreach, Linn County Master Gardeners and Kirkwood Community College.
