Student of the Month

August Student of the Month: Hussein Baderddeine

What is your background?: I’m an international student from Lebanon. I come from a big family of nine kids in Tyre which is on the southern coast of the country. The name of the high school I went to is Stars College. I specified in Life Science in my senior year and loved the domain of study.

What brought you to Kirkwood and why?: I chose Kirkwood because I had heard from my brother that it’s a great start for new comers like me. Kirkwood is a community college full of helpful, welcoming, and patient instructors, faculty, and staff.

What is your program of study and what interests you about it?: My program of study is Liberal Arts (AS) for right now, but I’m planning to major in Microbiology as soon as I transfer to a four-year college.

Are you involved in anything off of campus?: I’m work with a mobile clinic in Iowa City. I’ve also helped out a couple of times as an Arabic translator and a COVID screener.

What do you do for fun?: I play the sports I enjoy such as soccer and swimming. I also enjoy watching TV. I try to hang out with my family as well as read more (which is something that I’m trying to acquire as a hobby recently) too.

Where do you see yourself in five years?: I see myself in a much better situation in my academic and the professional life. I can’t really say where I will be exactly, but what I do know for sure is that I’ll have more experience, more social and professional relationships, and more knowledge in and outside of academics.
