Golden Opportunity Scholarship Celebrates College’s 50th Anniversary

Cedar Rapids, Iowa (February 3, 2015)-Kirkwood Community College is announcing the Golden Opportunity Scholarship for recent high school graduates in the college’s seven county service area. The scholarship removes the first barrier to paying for college by “filling the gap” between financial aid grants and the cost of tuition.

Kirkwood, founded in 1966, will celebrate its 50th anniversary in 2016. According to Kirkwood President Mick Starcevich, the scholarship was put together as a way to say thank you to the area the college serves.

“This scholarship is just one way we want to express our gratitude to our community,” said Starcevich. “Over the years, the people in the Corridor have supported us time and time again. We wanted to repay them for their faith in us. This is an incredible opportunity for recent high school graduates in our seven county service area. Not only will it help reduce student debt, but it will also help train more skilled workers for our region.”

To be eligible, students:

  • Must enroll at Kirkwood Community College within one year of graduating high school in Kirkwood’s seven county service area (Linn, Johnson, Benton, Jones, Iowa, Cedar and Washington)
  • Must complete their FAFSA and demonstrate financial need
  • Enroll in a minimum of 12 semester hours
  • Must maintain a 2.0 GPA on all work attempted at Kirkwood Community College

The awards will be given out on a first-come, first serve basis until the funds are exhausted. In addition, students who receive the scholarship will have the opportunity to renew it for a second year.

Recipients of the Golden Opportunity Scholarship will also be encouraged to apply for nearly $3 million of additional scholarships available through the Kirkwood Foundation, one of the largest community college scholarship programs in the nation.
