May Student of the Month: Mathlida Mola

By May 10, 2019May 15th, 2019No Comments

What is your background?: My name is Mathlida Mola and I am student from Kisumu, Kenya. I have nine siblings (six sisters and three brothers ) and was blessed with a second mother at a young age after my biological parents passed away. I went to Lions High School in my hometown.

What brought you to Kirkwood and why?: When I was doing a year of religious service in Haifa Israel, I was looking into continuing with my higher education. Both my sister and brother-in-law had gone through Kirkwood and recommended that it would be a good start for me. I applied, came here and have appreciated all the opportunities that Kirkwood has provided.

What is your program of study and what interests you about it?: I am studying Accounting. I chose Accounting because in high school I had a math teacher who mentored and made me love working with numbers. So when it came time to choosing a field of study, accounting was the best fit.

Are you involved in anything else on campus? If so, what and why?: Yes, I am part of the International Student Leadership Team. I have enjoyed being part of this team because through it I’ve been able to meet and interact with people from different cultures and learn so much from them. I have been able to learn leadership skills and picked up basic conversational words in different languages

Are you involved in anything off of campus?: I am involved in religious activities. My religion is Baha’i Faith. As a Baha’i I try to involve myself with Baha’i activities like children’s spiritual education classes. I also help a junior youth spiritual empowerment program which was created for those between the ages of 12 and 15. It helps them develop spiritual perception, as well as patterns of thought and behavior that will characterize them throughout their lives.

What do you do for fun?: I love listening to music, dancing, catching up with friends, playing with my nieces, and learning how to play the guitar through youtube. 😉

Where do you see yourself in five years?: In five years, I see myself done with my undergrad and enjoying working within my field. I have loved helping people out with their taxes. Therefore, I plan on registering as a tax preparer. I will have gone for a Baha’i pilgrimage and visited a few other Baha’i houses of worship. I also see myself possibly getting my masters.
